1971 Series Victory of India in England

1971 Series Victory of India in England Information

India's Test series win in England in 1971, coming right on the heels of the triumph in the West Indies soil, underlined India's growing stature in the world stage. The entire country basked in the collective pride of this memorable triumph against their former colonial masters.

After the first two Tests ended without any result, India emerged victorious in the third Test by four wickets to clinch the three Test series 1-0. Batting first, England put up a respectable total of 355 with useful contributions from their lower order batsmen. In reply, India made 284 with Ray Illingworth scalping five Indian wickets.

The evenly poised match virtually landed in India's kitty when a masterful display of spin bowling by Bhagwat Chandrashekhar helped India skittle out England for a paltry 101 in their second innings. India cruised home to victory thanks to crucial contributions from Ajit Wadekar and Dilip Sardesai.

As in the West Indies, the spin attack was the cornerstone of India's success in the Test series and even a spinner of the caliber of Erapalli Prasanna failed to gain a berth in the Test squad.
